What happens in your first counselling session?

You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or a polished life story. The first conversation is simply a place to start.

The first session is not a test. It is a conversation about what would help.
Quick answer

A first counselling session usually explores what has been happening, how it affects daily life and what you would like to change. You and the therapist agree on practical next steps together.

You can come before things become unbearable

People seek counselling for stress, grief, anxiety, low mood, relationships, parenting, work pressure and many other reasons. There is no minimum level of suffering required. If something keeps taking up more of your life than you want it to, that is enough reason to talk.

The therapist will ask what brings you in

You may discuss what has changed, what a difficult day looks like, sleep, relationships, work and what support you already have. You can take your time, say when you are not ready to discuss something and ask how privacy works. The conversation should feel collaborative, not like an interrogation.

Together, you choose a useful direction

Some people want help calming anxiety; others want to understand a pattern, make a decision or cope with a loss. The therapist may suggest practical exercises between sessions. If another type of care would be more helpful, they should explain why and discuss the referral with you.

Choose virtual or in-person support

Virtual therapy through Chat na Penda can be helpful when privacy at home, travel or a busy schedule makes an in-person visit difficult. In-person therapists are available at selected branches. The central WhatsApp team can help you find the current option that fits.
